Penina Championship Description

The Penina Championship Golf Course is the grandfather of all courses in the Algarve and a permanent living memory to its architect and active promoter, Sir Henry Cotton. It was originally paddy fields for rice growing that has been converted into a flat challenging course and especially for the stronger player. Something short of half a million shrubs and trees were planted in the conversion. As the fairways are flat Henry Cotton introduced strategically placed water hazards to catch the unwary long hitter.

Penina Championship is still a great test of golf, and a lovely course and setting. It is looking past it's best, the course in parts is looking a little unloved, especially on the front nine, which is a shame, and disappointing way to start. The back nine is a decent condition. Overall a very fun and fair course to play. Greens are soft, grass is bermuda and therefore more amercian style of course than european. Was difficult to get a coffee at 8am before the round as a green fee - for some reason, and no half time refreshments/ carts on the course, so bring provisions.

Stunning course layout but very poorly presented. Lots of areas around the greens and even fairways with no grass at all. And several greens with disease that should not be in play. That said with some effort it could be spectacular

The course layout is good, being a Henry Cotton design, you'd expect that, but wow, there's a lot of work to do to return this course to its former glory. Greens weren't bad and some pretty good but fairways and the semi-rough were generally poor. The back 9 was in better condition than the front. I hope that one day the condition matches the layout and it'll be worth a return visit, until then I'll spend the same amount of money to play much better looked after courses in the area.
